The second floor when john adams first occupied the president s house in 1800 the second floor was generally reserved for private and family use. The second floor of the white house residence is the first family residence where their bedrooms and private sitting rooms are located as well as some guest bedrooms such as the lincoln bedroom. In 1902 president theodore roosevelt relocated his office from the second floor of the residence to this newly constructed building. This central building first constructed from 1792 to 1800 is home to the president of the united states and the first family.

The current desk is part of the white house collection and was commissioned to be built for theodore roosevelt s use in the oval office. Several important figures have used the desk including presidents taft wilson harding coolidge and for a few months hoover. James madison randolph grandson of thomas jefferson and the first presidential grandchild as well as esther cleveland grover cleveland s daughter and the first presidential child were both born on this floor in the white house. The west wing has expanded and undergone several renovations since then but it has remained the official workplace of the president.
